Apple Pie

Apple pie is one of the most renowned and delicious baked desserts worldwide, especially in traditional American kitchens. With origins tracing back to Europe, it first appeared as “Paie of Apples” in a cookbook named “The Forme of Cury” in the 14th century England. Initially comprising apples, raisins, figs, and spices, European immigrants brought it to North America, solidifying its status as a classic American recipe and a symbol of traditional American baking. Apple pie is an ideal choice in the fall, exuding a fragrant aroma, rich filling, and a delightful warm taste. The experience of preparing it becomes a sweet opportunity to enjoy moments with family.

The Ingredients

Pie Crust:

  1. 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 teaspoon salt
  3. 1 cup Baker’s Choice unsalted butter, cold and diced
  4. 1 tablespoon sugar
  5. 6-8 tablespoons ice water

Filling:

  1. 6-7 medium-sized apples (green or sweet) cored and thinly sliced
  2. 1 cup granulated sugar
  3. 1/2 cup flour
  4. 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  5. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  6. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  7. 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  8. 2 tablespoons Baker’s Choice unsalted butter, diced
  9. 1 beaten egg

How to prepare

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the cold diced Baker’s Choice unsalted butter to the flour. Use a pastry cutter or fingertips to break down the butter into coarse sand-like crumbs.
  3. Gradually add cold water and mix until the dough comes together. You may need to add additional water.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal halves and shape each. Cover them with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes to chill and firm up.
  5. While the dough chills, peel and thinly slice the apples. Place the slices in a large bowl and add sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Stir the ingredients until the slices are coated with spices and sugar.
  6. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
  7. Take the dough out of the refrigerator and let it rest for a few minutes until it becomes pliable.
  8. On a floured surface, roll out half of the dough to cover the bottom of the pie pan.
  9. Place the rolled-out dough in the pie pan and press it to fit the shape and edges of the pan.
  10. Fill the bottom crust with the apple filling, then cover the apples with the remaining rolled-out dough.
  11. Use the beaten egg to brush the remaining dough on the top.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a cooling rack before slicing and serving.
